Jamie Carragher has cast doubt over whether Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak would choose Arsenal this summer, despite growing speculation linking the Swedish forward with a move to the Emirates Stadium. The 24-year-old has enjoyed a prolific season, scoring 19 goals in all competitions, and is being talked up as a potential £150 million signing.

Carragher, however, believes that Liverpool could be a more attractive destination for Isak. Speaking on The Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet, he questioned the assumption that Arsenal is the clear frontrunner for the striker’s signature. He pointed out that Liverpool, who could still win the Premier League this season, are also in need of a top center forward. He argued that, given a choice, Isak might prefer a move to the champions rather than a club still building towards title contention.
“There’s a lot of talk about Isak,” Carragher said. “There’s almost this feeling that Arsenal are going to sign him or that Arsenal need to sign him. Are you looking at it as an Arsenal fan and thinking that’s realistic? That you can just go and buy Isak from Newcastle? He’s got three or four years left on his contract.”
He continued by suggesting that Liverpool’s need for a new striker is just as pressing as Arsenal’s, yet there has been little talk of the Reds entering the race. With Luis Díaz, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Núñez as their attacking options, Carragher believes Liverpool still lack a consistent, injury-free number nine.
“The reason I say that is because I think Liverpool are desperate for a center forward if I’m being totally honest,” he added. “There’s no talk about Liverpool getting Isak. I don’t understand where all this Arsenal talk has come from. Liverpool need one as well, and if Liverpool win the league, surely you would pick the team that won the league.”
Newcastle are expected to demand a significant fee for Isak, who has a long-term contract at St. James’ Park. Arsenal’s need for a striker has been widely discussed, with Mikel Arteta yet to sign a top-class number nine since taking charge. Despite Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah leading the line, the Gunners have lacked a clinical presence up front.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have yet to be seriously linked with Isak, but their attack has been inconsistent at times. While Jota and Núñez have produced important goals, neither has fully convinced as a long-term solution. If Liverpool enter the race for Isak, it could complicate Arsenal’s pursuit, particularly if Jurgen Klopp’s successor prioritizes a new striker.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Isak’s future could be one of the biggest talking points. Newcastle’s financial position and their willingness to sell could play a crucial role in deciding his next move. Whether Arsenal or Liverpool make a serious move remains to be seen, but Carragher’s comments suggest that the competition could be more open than many expect.
