KEANE SLAMS UNITED’S DEFENCE

Roy Keane was highly critical of Manchester United’s defensive setup following Liverpool’s opening goal at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. The former United captain questioned the positioning of Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, who were caught out of position as Liverpool took advantage to score.

The goal, which came 35 minutes into the match, followed a misplaced pass from Casemiro intended for Kobbie Mainoo. Ryan Gravenberch intercepted the ball, advanced quickly, and fed Mohamed Salah, whose pinpoint cross was headed home by Luis Diaz. It was a moment that highlighted United’s defensive frailties, particularly with both Mazraoui and Dalot pushed up the field as Casemiro attempted the risky pass.

Keane, speaking during the halftime analysis on Sky Sports, didn’t hold back in his criticism of United’s defensive organization. “The mistake from Casemiro here… for all his experience, that is not a first-time pass. That is not worth the risk,” Keane said. He emphasized that while individual errors happen, the lack of defensive cover was inexcusable.

“When they lose it (the ball), they are all over the place. Listen, a player can make a mistake, but they are all all over the place,” Keane continued. “Look at your right-back, where is your right-back? Where is your left-back? You are not in control. Liverpool are good enough to punish [them]. Good players will punish you.”

Keane’s analysis underscored a broader concern about United’s defensive discipline, particularly in big games where any lapse in concentration can be ruthlessly exploited. While Casemiro’s misplaced pass was the catalyst for the goal, Keane made it clear that the lack of defensive positioning was a significant issue that allowed Liverpool to capitalize.
