Italy international Matteo Darmian has confirmed that he would like to part ways with Manchester United during the summer transfer window. The 28-year-old managed just five Premier League starts during a frustrating 2017/18 campaign and he has now decided on a fresh challenge regarding of the injury crisis at the club.
Club-captain Antonio Valencia picked up a calf problem during the opening stages of the goalless draw against Real Salt Lake and he has since been receiving treatment from the club’s physios. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old has been backed to return before the season opener next month but his probable absence may witness either Timothy Fosu-Mensah or Victor Lindelof take up the right-back position.
Darmian was particularly impressive under the guidance of former head coach Louis van Gaal and he continued to command a decent role during Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge. However, the previous campaign was a huge disappointment for him on the personal scale as he found himself behind both Ashley Young and Luke Shaw in the pecking order. So far, no clubs have matched United’s £17m asking price but there has certainly been interest from the likes of Juventus and Napoli this month.
