German defender ShkodranMustafi is closing in on a move to Italian football club Genoa according to the latest news coming out of the media in Italy.

Mustafi, 29, will make a return to Italian football as a free agent this summer.

The Germany international became a free agent this summer after leaving Schalke 04. He was part of the Schalke 04 squad that finished at the bottom of the table in the German Bundesliga last season. Schalke 04 were relegated from the German top flight at the end of last season.

Mustafi joined Schalke 04 from Premier League giants Arsenal during the winter transfer window earlier this year. He was released at the end of his short-term contract at Schalke 04 this summer.

Transfer expert and Italian journalist NicoloSchira stated that Mustafi is in talks to sign for Italian football team Genoa on a free transfer. He made this known via his official Twitter handle. According to him, Mustafiand Genoa are negotiating a four-year deal for the central defender.

Mustafi is on course to return to the city of Genoa having played for Italian football team Sampdoria at the start of his career. He was a Sampdoria player for a period of two years between 2012 and 2014 before he left Italian football to sign for Valencia in the Spanish league. Mustafi signed for Arsenal in a €41m deal in 2016. He left the Gunners in February for free despite having some months left on his contract at the club.

Fiorentina were interested in signing Mustafi before they opted for MatijaNastatic from his Schalke 04 team. Adana Demirspor from Turkey were also keen on taking Mustafi who has a lot of experience internationally. He has two goals in 20 games for the German national team. The central defender was part of the German team that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil.
